Contemporary Sunset, "After the Storm," by Amy Whitehouse

Oil, 8" x 10" $150

I returned to FL after Hurricane Dorian had traveled northwards
and encountered a glorious sight during an evening stroll.
The air was clean, I found three sharks' teeth,
and I was inspired to paint.

Beach Walk, Beach and Ocean Paintings by Amy Whitehouse

Oil, 6" x 6" $95

Currently I'm on my five-week painting retreat
at a private beach in Florida.
I'm painting daily and collecting photos
for studio work in the coming year.

The sea oats are a protected plant here,
and their waving in the breeze mesmerizes and soothes.

Beach Days, Beach and Ocean Paintings by Amy Whitehouse

6" x 6" Oil, $125

This petite seascape was painted after spending a day
 at the beach in Florida.
The water was cooling, the clouds luscious,
the sounds soothing.

Beach, Contemporary Seascape Paintings by Amy Whitehouse

18" x 24", Oil, $800

As you know, I could paint the ocean and the beach everyday,
and not get tired of the subject.
Especially when it's 108 degrees outside as it is now, here in the desert.

As I prepare for my new position as Art Teacher for grades K-2 and 6-8
YIKES
I haven't had as much time to paint.
But this is my latest, and I'm pretty happy with it.
I can almost feel the powdery sand all over my feet,
and almost hear the comforting sound of the surf.

Beach Day, Beach and Ocean Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

20" x 24", Oil, $800

Painting 34 of CHALLENGE 56

Countless layers of paint make up this scene, as did
countless compositions.
Four days of painting, scraping, paper-towelling,
lightly adding layers, and ever so slightly tweaking,
and finally I think I found the stopping point.
I wanted to show the reflection of the sky on the wet sand,
as well as the grasses on the border of the beach.
And I wanted to achieve some abstraction
while developing a softer beach scene.
Lastly, I worked for color harmony.

Atlantic Beach, Beach and Ocean Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

12" x 16," Oil, $250
Day 17 of CHALLENGE 30/30
30 Paintings in 30 Days

This challenge has inspired, stretched, and thrilled me.
It IS a challenge to get a new painting produced each day,
but the juices are flowing, and I really don't want to do much else.
And painting the beach and one of those funny gulls is pure joy.

Florida Gull, Bird Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

16" x 20", Oil on Stretched Canvas, $600

On my recent fabulous trip to Florida,
I was - as usual - captivated by the seabirds.
I painted a few small ones, but really enjoyed
this big one; this baby is almost life size.
